A Walk to Castle Cornet

Filed under: Judy Has Fun by Judy

The weather has been unseasonably pleasant recently and I took advantage of the mild temperatures to walk through town and down to the harbour. There was a light breeze coming off the water and it was so delightful out that I decided to walk all the way out to Castle Cornet.

Castle Cornet dates back originally to the 13th century, and the present castle is largely from the 16th century. It’s one of the most attractive features on the St. Peter Port harbour. It’s a fair walk out to the castle, and since I was in no great hurry I took it slowly. Although as a general rule I tend to feel the cold and therefore wear a nice warm coat, I was pleased that I’d risked just wearing my Guernsey instead … I’d worked up quite a sweat (sorry Mother, I mean a “glow”) by the time I got out to Castle Cornet. Harbouring Thoughts of Mackerel

Filed under: Judy Eats by Judy

I’m fully recovered from my illness now and I can’t tell you what a pleasure it is to feel better! I’ve been able to get out of the house and see friends, to go shopping at the market, and even to walk down to the harbour and stroll along the jetty.

St. Peter Port is largely a pleasure harbour now, and the marina is packed with private yachts and other recreational boats. There are still fisherman who land their catch here, and the ferries from England and France dock here too. But most of the cargo comes through the harbour in St. Sampson, about three miles up the coast from here. There’s always been a slightly gritty quality to that part of the island compared with St. Peter Port, although there are charming spots there too.

Feeling a Little Better Today

Filed under: Judy at Home by Judy

I’ve been taking it easy for the last couple of days because I had a touch of flu, or something of that sort. I feel much better now, and I did enjoy getting outside, having been cooped up in the house for a couple of days. I just got back from the fish market with some freshly caught mackerel, which I plan to cook for dinner this evening.

A Music-Filled Evening

Filed under: Judy Has Fun by Judy

I had a lovely evening last night when the Guernsey Camerata played, amongst other things, the Mozart Wind Quintet. The Camerata is just one of the lovely orchestras that we have here in Guernsey. Of course most of them are amateurs, but they are of a very high quality. The Camerata brings in professional musicians for special concerts. More …

Hobnobs But No Photographs

Well it’s been a few days, and I have a nice packet of hobnobs sitting right here waiting for someone to come and help me with the photographs. They’re yummy!

So in the meantime, let me talk a little bit more about how I spend my day. More …

Adding Some Photographs

Filed under: Judy at Home by Judy

I would love to put some pictures in here to show you a little about Guernsey. But it’s been years since I took any photos, and of course I have no idea how to add photos to this blog. I suppose it must be possible, but I don’t know how I would get my photos onto the computer. Perhaps I’ll ask my granddaughter to help next time she comes to visit. More …

My Grandchildren

Filed under: My Family by Judy

I mentioned in my last note that my children live here on Guernsey also. They are both married with children, and so there are three generations of us living here on the island. I have three grandchildren, the oldest of whom, my granddaughter, is the one who set up this blog for me. Although I type fairly well. I’m not at all, technically minded, so I’m grateful that she took the time to put this together for me. More …

Where I Live

Filed under: Judy at Home by Judy

I live in one of the more far-flung places in the United Kingdom, Guernsey. Guernsey is an island off the coast of France, one of the Channel Islands. It’s not a particularly large place, just a few miles from end to end, but it really is one of the prettiest places in the world. More …

Thanks to my dear granddaughter, I’m starting a new chapter by beginning to write a blog.

Why? Well, I’ve always enjoyed writing, and it seems like a good way of keeping in touch with some of my friends and family around the world. More …
